This is a Churchwarden Pipe finished in Pineapple Lacquer (Bo Luo Qi), a traditional Chinese lacquerware technique. Crafted from wood and coated with natural urushi, the process begins with applying raw lacquer, priming with ash, curing, and sanding—a cycle repeated three times.
To create its unique texture, dried loofah fibers are used to dab lacquer onto the surface, forming raised mounds known as Niandui. After curing for two months, over ten additional layers of lacquer are applied; each layer requires a minimum of 10 days to cure before the next can be added. Finally, these layers are sanded down to reveal a natural, flowing, and vibrant texture that feels warm and substantial in hand. Due to this meticulous process, the production cycle for a single pipe takes at least six months.
